— If one uses this time and experience of being in prison to practice meditation, to practice dharma, then being in prison, even though it is believed you are in prison by outside people, in reality it becomes a retreat for you. —

Mount Pleasant prisoners raise cash for charity

The Associated Press, July 18, 2008

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa - Inmates at the state prison in Mount Pleasant have made history as the first male prisoners to join in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life behind prison walls.

About 540 men took part in the fundraiser, dubbed "Walk the Yard," on Wednesday and Thursday.

"I've worked in corrections for 30 years. This is the most positive, uplifting event I've ever seen here," said Gail Huckins, the prison's associate superintendent of treatment. "It has brought the guys together on a whole different level."

The men were organized in teams of 10 and walked for six straight hours around a quarter-mile course.
