Prisoners on the Housing NZ chain gang

A scheme to put prisoners to work refurbishing state houses can start now a new construction yard has been set up at Spring Hill prison in north Waikato.

The Government announced the scheme, a joint venture between the Department of Corrections and Housing New Zealand, in March and today the yard was opened for business.

Corrections Minister Phil Goff and Housing Minister Maryan Street said the yard would provide employment and training for prisoners while providing a valuable service.

More than 40 prisoners will work in the refurbishment yard and 50 in the internal prison workshop refurbishing 40 houses a year.
