— If one uses this time and experience of being in prison to practice meditation, to practice dharma, then being in prison, even though it is believed you are in prison by outside people, in reality it becomes a retreat for you. —

Sometimes I'm amazed in how much the prisoners appreciate any advice or suggestions given to them. Under the pressure of immense suffering they have a special gift to opening up their hearts and minds to an alternative to suffering, which is breaking out of the cycle of habitual tendencies and ego-clinging. I realize that I, as an outsider, cannot really imagine the full extent of their suffering. It's similar to imagining the suffering of the beings in the hell realms - we somewhat can get a taste, but we don't know how it really feels.

Some of the prisoners meditate from 3 am until dawn and again in the evening until 10 pm. Now this is inspiring to us here in the "outside world!"

Over the years, I have seen immense changes in the prisoners I write to.
